For many women, there are periods in life when it is easy to balance work and family. Before having children it may be easy to work long hours, especially if your spouse also works. However, once children come along many women feel as though they have to choose between pursuing their careers and raising their families. Many women choose to put their careers on hold to focus on their families during this time. Other women attempt to work part or full time and utilize a day care or babysitter for their children. When women make this choice, they often feel as though they are having trouble balancing work and family without neglecting either one. Although this balance is never easy, here are a few tips that will help you to do it more effectively.
The first step in effectively balancing work and family is to admit that it is difficult. All mothers and wives who work outside of the home recognize this. It is normal for these women to feel as though they are being pulled in two different directions. For women who have to work even though they would rather stay home, this can be especially difficult. Many women find comfort in talking with other women in similar situations. If this is you, then seek out time with other women who work. They will help you to evaluate your feelings and be more at ease with your decisions.
Many women who work outside of the home feel as though their time with their families is limited. One thing that you can do to help this is to do your best to leave work at work. This enables you to focus on your family while you are at home. In the days of Blackberry phones, e-mail, and telecommuting, this can be easier said than done. Many people feel as though they are constantly “on call” even when they are not at the office. It may even require you discussing the issue with your boss. If this happens, explain that leaving your work at the office to enjoy family time will help you to be a more balanced and productive employee.
When you are away from the office, be sure to make the most of your family time. You can do this by making an effort to do something that you all enjoy. Whether it is splashing in the pool, walking in the park, or visiting the zoo, try to spend your family time making memories. Try not to let the small tasks take up too much of your time. This may mean delegating these responsibilities to someone else. Many women who work find it helpful to hire someone to clean their house or do other household tasks so that they can focus on their families.
Whether you are staying home or working outside of your home, it can be helpful to revisit this issue periodically. The best decision one year may not be the best one the following year. Situations change, especially when children grow up so quickly. Reevaluating your balance between work and family can help you to make sure that you are doing what is best for everyone.
