Have you ever been passed up for a special project but didn’t know why?  Did you assume the boss just didn’t like you?

Assumptions are dangerous.  They affect how you handle things and may be detrimental to your business position.  As career builders, assumptions put you in a state of not being confident in your abilities.

You may have been passed up because the boss didn’t know you were interested in the project.  It may have been completely unintentional, but you jumped to conclusions that may have made for a bad situation.

What career builders do you believe are holding you back?

Some assumptions that could get you in trouble:

•    Assuming no one is interested in your opinion
•    Assuming you are passed up for projects because you are not a good employee

Don’t think if you are not asked for your opinion that no one is interested.  Contribute your ideas to show management you are thinking of new ways to help the business.

Don’t assume no one is interested in what you have to say.  They may just be busy and are relying on you to tell them your thoughts.

If you are interested in a project you heard about, set up a meeting with your boss and let him/her know that you would like to be a part of the project and why you feel you would be an asset.

Keep the little voice in your head that is chattering on about your limiting beliefs quiet.

Take a leadership role in your own mind and you will be able to stop the damaging assumptions that pop up from time to time.

Do You Dress For Success When You Attend Networking Events?

Networking is such an important aspect to business.  Many people don’t put enough value in networking.

Networking isn’t just about meeting for a meal or drinks.  It’s about sharing information, tapping resources, leveraging your work with thought partnership with others.  To dress for success at networking events you need to be prepared to find resources that will benefit you and make use of them.

You need to meet people with other expertise than your own to grow in your business.

Do you dress for success when you attend networking events?

Networking isn’t all about selling to other people, it’s about helping them and building relationships so they can help you as well.

When at a networking event:

•    Ask people about themselves
•    Make connections
•    Think of ways you can help others

People love to talk about themselves.  You’ll build more relationships by being interested in those around you.  As you learn, you make connections and can think of ways to help that person, or of other people that you could introduce.

Be sure to network all the time and you will build a great relationship with others and can begin to leverage your business.

Do You Know Personality Types That Are Misunderstood?

Assumptions are not worthwhile opinions.  You don’t know what someone is thinking unless you ask them.

Don’t use beliefs from the past in your present life.  Test your assumptions by asking others what their thoughts are.

If you walk into a room and someone looks angry, don’t assume they are angry at you.  Something may have happened to them earlier that caused them to be upset, therefore looking angry.  Personality types are all different and people react to events in many different ways.

Do you know personality types that are misunderstood?

•    Think of other reasons that person could be upset.  Treat them with kindness, not resentment because you want to change their mood for the better, not make it worse.
•    Test your assumptions against reality not past beliefs or hurts.

You will find this helps you to become a better business person also because you are being calm and rational and finding out the true story.

That person may be upset because of something personal that happened, or because a project they are working on is not turning out the way they planned.

If it turns out the person is upset with you, you will be able to make amends because you know the facts.

Don’t base your reaction on things that have happened to you in the past.  You may be taking out your past hurt on someone new for no reason and therefore damaging your relationship with that person.

By turning off the negative news and focusing on the positive you will raise your energy level.

Don’t micro-manage your team because you are still involved in the day to day tasks.  In order to have abundance and prosperity in your business you need to learn to let go of the old ways.

Take your new leadership role and go in a new direction.  Promote continual learning, be a mentor and support your staff.

•    Take charge and become a leader
•    Delegate tasks to your capable staff members so you can focus your time on bringing in new income streams
•    Don’t stand over your staff and try to do everything yourself.  Make sure the tasks are being completed correctly and on time, but learn to step back and let each person assigned to a job take care of what has to be done

By becoming the leader your team needs, you will be able to increase your bottom line and save money and time along the way.  Trust in your staff members.  If you don’t have faith in them they shouldn’t be working for you!  Show you appreciate them and you will have a loyal team that strives to do a great job!

Do You Have A Mentor As A Career Builder?

Finding a mentor doesn’t have to be difficult.  Mentors come in all shapes and sizes, and in all businesses.  Your mentor doesn’t have to be in the same business you’re in, they just need to be someone you can learn from that has been where you are.

Mentors shorten the learning curve for you.  They teach you what works and tell you what doesn’t.  As a career builder, mentors are exceptional!

Once you find a mentor, learn everything you can from them.  They have been where you are now and are at the place you want to get to.  They want to teach you and help you so you don’t make the same mistakes they made along the way.  The advice and feedback they give you can be invaluable to you as a career builder.

Mentors will change throughout your life depending on the level you are at.  Always pick someone that will expand your reality and help you grow.  One thing to keep in mind is that as long as you want to keep moving forward, you need a mentor to support you!

Are You Stuck In A Double Bind Personality Type In Your Company?

Many females lead their teams in sports or their organizations in college.  They are capable and self assured and show that.  They are mentors to their team members.

Then they enter the work force.  Reality suddenly changes.  In most companies, unfortunately, they are still male dominated.  There is a new personality type to contend with now.

If you sit a female employee next to a male employee holding the same position, and they answer a question identically, the male employee will be seen as confident, while the female employee will be seen as assertive.

This is referred to as a double bind, which means when women act like women they are discounted as weak and if they act like men they are seen as aggressive.

Are you stuck in a double bind personality type in your company?

To get past this double bind:

•    Act in a way that is comfortable to you
•    Call it as you see it

By choosing to behave in a way that is comfortable for you, the people around you know what to expect.  A combination of qualities may be best.

Call it as you see it so the company is aware of what is happening.

You can make your work situation more pleasant by being you.   Once the company is aware of the double bind, hopefully they will start to take control of the situation and change the way the workforce is for the better.

Are You Staying In Contact With Your Connections For Business and Money?

After you meet people, you need to stay in contact with those connections.  Connections are important for all businesses.  Without them it takes you longer to grow your business and business and money go hand in hand.  Your connections will help you in both aspects.

Keeping in contact with people you meet can make the difference when you need help.  Not only should you stay in contact but if you come across a resource that would help your contact, let them know about it.  Connections are all about helping each other.
