If you look back from November of 2008 through February 2009, it seemed that news about the economy was getting worse every day. Unemployment was rising, families were losing their homes, small businesses were going bankrupt, the stock market was plummeting, and the financial and automobile industries were facing financial meltdowns of a scale not seen for the last half-century. Every day I would think that the news could not possibly get worse, but it did. A mass consciousness of fear was building. Then something interesting started happening. Messages started appearing in the news media, seminars, churches and speeches that positive attitudes could ease financial pressures and fears. It was like a shift occurred, all of the sudden there was more and more good news. Large financial institutions were beginning to make a profit, the stock market was starting to rally, housing starts increased, and the Federal Reserve Chairman forecasted that the recession would end this year. We are by no means out of the woods yet, but imagine what can happen if we all collectively feel hope rather than fear.
